The characteristics of Liceo Classico

A tradition of excellence that has been renewed for 500 years

Care of scientific knowledge and foreign languages

We aim to keep alive the dialogue between humanistic knowledge and scientific knowledge. Scientific knowledge is strengthened compared to a normal classical high school in order to shorten the distances with other study paths and help the kids who access the scientific university paths. This aspect is strengthened especially with the three-year options. Particular attention is also paid to foreign languages: English and Spanish.

Immerse yourself in classicism

A deep exposure to the classical world and direct comparison with the original classical texts have been part of the Jesuit high school tradition since the beginning. To enter into this perspective, it is necessary to immerse oneself in the classical world by working a lot on languages with a laboratory approach (to experience the taste of the art of translation) and immediately starting to tackle the great themes of classicism through creative methods (daily life, archaeology, the discovery of the ancient world, the comparison between the cultures of the ancient world). The learning experience is enriched by immersions in classical culture (arts and theater workshop) and those directly "in the field" (visits in Italy and abroad, Syracuse, twinning with the "Arsakeio" High School of Thessaloniki).

The great relevance of classical training

The curriculum of the Gonzaga Campus Classical High School renews this tradition in the awareness that it is an effective key to interpreting today's society. Even today, dialogue with the classics stimulates us to confront the great questions of man of all times, demonstrating their powerful relevance. This ability to promote the formation of a unitary thought that, starting from the knowledge of the classical world, helps the critical re-elaboration of the present is particularly relevant in the face of the complex challenges of the future.
Classical studies therefore provide the transversal skills needed to face the challenges of contemporary society, providing students with the tools for qualified and conscious access to university studies, both in the humanities and sciences, and for the progressive transition to work and social commitment.

Liceo Classico Curriculum

The Classical High School curriculum offers a rich and varied curriculum, combining in-depth study of traditional humanities with the introduction of modern and elective subjects. The two-year program focuses on linguistic and cultural foundations, while the three-year program broadens the horizons with subjects such as philosophy, geopolitics, and scientific laboratories, allowing students to customize their curriculum for their future careers.

Symposium

Thanks to school autonomy, Symposia was born, a week dedicated to interdisciplinary and ethical themes, where students explore themselves and the world in a new way.
Two-year period: Experiential workshops to discover Planet Earth and promote active and ecological citizenship.
Third year: Reflecting on the meaning of life, inspired by the Bible as the "great book of humanity".
Fourth year: Debate Tournament.
Fifth year: Autobiography and writing of the student's curriculum.

Geopolitics Course

Politics has its deep roots in the classical world where it retains a profoundly positive meaning. Giving space to the geopolitical dimension in the course of study means forming thinking and aware citizens, capable of connecting the past and the present, developing a critical understanding of the contemporary world and a sense of responsibility towards the future.

Logic Course

The Logic course, starting from the first two years, focuses on the development of analytical thinking and abstract reasoning skills and is divided into different modules (symbolic logic, verbal logic and mathematical logic). This course, promoting a critical and reflective approach to study, provides a solid foundation useful for learning all disciplines. From a perspective of orientation and preparation for university, the three-year period offers a continuation of the course with a more instrumental function for university studies that integrates teaching with preparatory simulations for the entrance tests to the major universities.

Course in Arts and Ancient Theatre

To provide space for immersion in the classical world, a path is proposed that allows students to explore the roots of artistic and theatrical expression, “immersing” themselves in the masterpieces of antiquity. Through in-depth study, practical workshops and the lived experience of the theatre, students will acquire not only a deep understanding of cultural heritage, but also fundamental skills in the field of performing arts and self-formation.

The curriculum is enhanced with a strong orientation component for university choices. Through a system of elective subjects, students can customize their study plan with one of the following electives, chosen according to their
aptitudes and interests (discussed in advance with their individual tutor):
– Law and Economics
Towards a university choice in the humanities and social sciences;
– Science and Models
Towards a choice in the medical-health or scientific-technological fields;
– Spanish
Towards a choice in the humanities and linguistics field, also useful for those considering continuing their studies abroad;
– Modern Greek
As a further linguistic bridge connecting the ancient to the contemporary, providing a reflection on languages and the interconnection between classical roots and the modern context.
