The characteristics of the STEAM Scientific High School
A laboratory for building the future

Orientation and University preparation
With respect to the need to prepare for university tests, the STEAM curriculum includes all the necessary elements: the study of science is strengthened, logic and mathematical models, statistics. The orientation approach is enhanced and strengthened by the entire research approach of the course and also by the research laboratories. The connection with partner institutions facilitates the connection with university choices, the world of work and the new professional skills required.

Laboratory work and “Research Days”
According to the STEAM methodology, the curriculum pays particular attention to the laboratory aspect in the humanities and especially in the scientific subjects, also in English. Research laboratories (Research days) are also part of the curriculum: three hours of afternoon activities, to be held with research teachers from the Universities and Partner institutions, during which the student is introduced to scientific research. In this direction, an investment has also been made to create a laboratory space where this entire process is facilitated.

Partnership of Excellence
The Gonzaga STEAM high school works in partnership and co-design with prestigious institutions belonging to the academic, scientific, research and innovation world: the University of Palermo, ISMETT, RIMED Foundation, Engineering Italia, CNR and INAF Astronomical Observatory of Palermo, which provide the project with specialized professional figures, know-how and research facilities.

Training a Research Student
The main characteristic of the STEAM student's outgoing profile is to become and be a man or woman of research. The student, in addition to understanding what it means to carry out research, will learn to recognize himself in the role of the researcher who carries it out, combining methodological rigor with personal involvement.

The STEAM methodology
The STEM method is an educational approach that integrates four main disciplines: Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.
Since 2023/2024, it has been decided to integrate art and design into this educational approach, giving rise to the STEAM scientific high school. This approach aims to promote interdisciplinary learning and the practical use of science knowledge to solve complex problems and face real-world challenges.

STEAM Scientific High School Study Plan
The STEAM Scientific High School curriculum integrates scientific and technological disciplines with art and design, offering an innovative and interdisciplinary educational path. The two-year period lays the foundations of the STEAM method with a focus on science, mathematics, computer science and English, while the three-year period broadens the educational horizon with disciplines such as philosophy of science, geopolitics and design. Thanks to research laboratories and collaboration with academic and scientific institutions, students develop practical and reflective skills oriented towards the future.

Science Course in English
In order to use the foreign language in a conscious and effective way, it is expected that a part of the science program, or a non-linguistic subject, will be taught in English using the CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) methodology.
In particular, this involves 33 hours per year (one hour per week) for the STEAM curriculum.

Design Course: STEAM and Creativity
The course marks the evolution from STEM to STEAM, integrating creativity and complex thinking in scientific and technological disciplines to address global challenges.
It offers a stimulating opportunity to explore creativity through practical skills in graphic, industrial and interior design, with an experimental approach that favors original and innovative solutions.

Chinese Language and Culture Course
In an interconnected world, studying Chinese as a second non-EU language offers a new way of seeing the world and engaging with the East. Immersion in its ancient culture opens up linguistic and professional perspectives, fostering intercultural understanding and new relationships in an evolving global context.

Philosophy of Science Course
The course offers a critical look at science, encouraging students to reflect on the philosophical bases of scientific theories. By analyzing the epistemological roots and philosophical implications of discoveries, they develop a broader understanding of the scientific process. This path stimulates critical reflection and prepares for intellectual challenges and original contributions in the academic and professional path.
Students refine the processes of philosophical reflection on ethical, epistemological and moral issues, with particular attention to scientific issues and the ecological horizon.

Cultural Studies Course
A path that enhances the humanistic dimension and the artistic-literary tradition dear to the Jesuit tradition. It is a discipline that makes students aware of historical, artistic and social processes and dynamics in the relationship between different geographical and cultural areas.
It represents the research aspect of the STEAM major in an interdisciplinary guise in the humanistic and linguistic fields, providing further and multiple opportunities to work on the skills of critical reflection and research methodology.

Geopolitics Course
Giving space to the geopolitical dimension in the course of study means training thinking and aware citizens, capable of connecting the past and the present, developing a critical understanding of the contemporary world and a sense of responsibility towards the future.

Research Days
A laboratory that is part of the curriculum, divided into three hours of afternoon activities to be held with research teachers from the Universities and Partner Companies and the co-presence of a scientific teacher, during which the student is introduced to scientific research.
Structured training path
A solid curriculum with no electives

Unlike other high school courses, the STEAM Scientific High School follows a defined study plan, without the possibility of customization through optional subjects. This approach guarantees a uniform and in-depth education, focused on the integration of science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics, without individual deviations. The teaching model is designed to offer a complete and interdisciplinary preparation, aligned with the challenges of the future.
