Cosa vuol dire essere studente di una scuola internazionale?

Il Gonzaga International School Palermo opera in un contesto multiculturale, con tutti i docenti madrelingua, alunni provenienti da diversi Paesi stranieri, e offre agli studenti programmi internazionali, interdisciplinari, laboratoriali, in cui gli studenti hanno un ruolo attivo nel processo di apprendimento. L’approccio allo studio critico e creativo, alla conoscenza dei contesti locali e di quelli globali, al multilinguismo inizia con il Pre-kindergarten a due anni e continua fino al Diploma IB, riconosciuto con punteggi molto elevati per l’accesso a tutte le più prestigiose università del mondo. La nostra scuola è una vera e propria innovazione nel Sud Italia: è l’unica scuola, autorizzata dall’International Baccalaureate Organization, a rilasciare il Diploma IB.  Ma cos’è che caratterizza una scuola internazionale distinguendola dalla scuola tradizionale?

Il profilo dello studente IB è costituito da 10 attributi fondamentali cui è riconosciuto valore nelle Scuole IB nel mondo: ricercatori, informati, pensatori, comunicatori, di sani principi, aperti di mente, premurosi, si assumono dei rischi, equilibrati, riflessivi.

Gli studenti soddisfano la loro naturale curiosità acquisendo le capacità necessarie a condurre ricerche significative e mirate, esplorano la conoscenza in una vasta gamma di discipline e sviluppano tematiche che hanno importanza e rilevanza locale e globale. Si abituano a pensare in modo critico e creativo al fine di prendere decisioni e risolvere problemi riuscendo così ad esprimere con sicurezza idee e informazioni in più di una lingua in una varietà di modi di comunicazione. Prendono seriamente in considerazione il proprio apprendimento ed analizzano i propri punti di forza e di debolezza in maniera costruttiva, assumendosi talvolta dei rischi nello scoprire nuovi ruoli, idee e strategie.

Grazie all’ambiente multiculturale imparano a rispettare i valori e le tradizioni di altri individui e di altre culture, manifestando sensibilità verso le necessità ed i sentimenti del prossimo sviluppando un buon senso etico, integrità, onestà e senso di giustizia. Sono coraggiosi e determinati nel difendere ciò in cui credono e capiscono l’importanza dell’equilibrio mentale e fisico e del benessere personale.

Cosa vuol dire essere studenti di una scuola internazionale? E soprattutto, cosa significa frequentare l’International School Palermo? Per rispondere a tutte queste domande abbiamo chiesto a due studenti della nostra Middle School: Giorgia, studentessa di M3, e Marco, anche lui studente di M3.

La prima cosa che abbiamo chiesto ai nostri studenti è stata proprio cosa significa studiare in una scuola internazionale rispetto ad una classica scuola italiana.

“Per me – ci ha detto Giorgia - essere una studentessa di una scuola internazionale è molto importante perché è tutto diverso rispetto ad una scuola tradizionale: è diverso l’approccio, il modo di insegnare, inoltre il nostro curriculum rientra nell’IB system e per noi è un grande vantaggio!”

“Un’altra cosa molto importante per me – aggiunge Marco – è che abbiamo la possibilità di utilizzare libri della Oxford University già dalla Middle School, e questo è molto utile perché ti preparano al programma di studio dell’High School e Diploma Program.”

A Giorgia, che ha studiato anche in altre scuole internazionali, abbiamo chiesto quali caratteristiche della nostra International School ritiene particolarmente importanti:
“Io ho studiato anche nelle scuole internazionali di Basilea e Johannesburg, sono state bellissime esperienze e il Gonzaga International School non è da meno!  Qui noi studenti siamo sempre messi al centro: gli insegnati sono molto bravi nello spiegare il programma e riescono a dedicarci il tempo necessario per approfondire gli argomenti, spingendoci a trovare sempre collegamenti e argomenti in comune con le altre materie, così impariamo più facilmente e anche in modo più veloce!”

Marco invece ci ha spiegato che “una delle cose più belle di questa scuola è che i professori ci incoraggiano sempre ad essere creativi e curiosi, e in classe facciamo un sacco di progetti e ricerche. Anche le valutazioni sono diverse dalle altre scuole: i professori tengono conto di tutto il percorso che ti ha portato a quel risultato, del tuo impegno e della creatività!”

Qual è il vostro rapporto con i compagni di classe? Cosa si prova a relazionarsi ogni giorno con ragazzi e ragazze che vengono da altre parti del mondo e hanno altre culture?

“È bellissimo fare amicizia con i nostri compagni perché impariamo un sacco di cose e sono veramente simpatici, anche in classe si crea un bellissimo rapporto e condividiamo molto! È bello vedere tutta questa diversità e vivere in un contesto che ti stimola e ti spinge sempre ad avere una mentalità aperta”.

Per quanto riguarda la lingua, com’è per voi parlare sempre in inglese a scuola?

“Poter studiare e parlare in inglese – spiega Marco - è uno dei vantaggi più grandi delle scuole internazionali: è la lingua più parlata al mondo e noi impariamo a utilizzarla nel modo corretto sin da piccoli. Ci aiuta anche ad avere più scelte e possibilità per il futuro: conoscendo così bene la lingua possiamo pensare di iscriverci anche ad università all’estero o di andare a vivere in altri Paesi.”

“Conoscere l’inglese bene come conosci l’italiano – conclude Giorgia – ti aiuta anche ad aprirti agli altri e ad avere una mentalità più aperta! Puoi riflettere su tante cose e in modo diverso. Una delle domande che mi fanno più spesso è “in che lingua pensi?” e tutti rimangono stupiti perchè non so mai cosa rispondere visto che delle volte penso in italiano e delle altre in inglese.”

What does it mean to be a student at an international school?

Gonzaga International School Palermo operates in a multicultural context, with all teachers native speakers, pupils from different foreign countries, and offers students international, interdisciplinary, laboratory-based programs in which students play an active role in the learning process. The approach to critical and creative study, knowledge of local and global contexts, and multilingualism begins with the two-year Pre-kindergarten and continues through to the IB Diploma, which is recognized with very high scores for access to all the world's most prestigious universities. Our school is a real innovation in Southern Italy: it is the only school, authorized by the International Baccalaureate Organization, to award the IB Diploma.  But what is it about an international school that distinguishes it from the traditional school?

The profile of the IB student consists of 10 key attributes that are recognized as valuable in IB Schools around the world: researcher, informed, thinker, communicator, principled, open-minded, caring, risk-taker, balanced, reflective.

Students satisfy their natural curiosity by acquiring the skills necessary to conduct meaningful and focused research, explore knowledge in a wide range of disciplines, and develop themes that have local and global relevance and importance. They become accustomed to thinking critically and creatively in order to make decisions and solve problems thereby being able to confidently express ideas and information in more than one language in a variety of modes of communication. They take their own learning seriously and analyze their strengths and weaknesses constructively, sometimes taking risks in discovering new roles, ideas and strategies.

Due to the multicultural environment, they learn to respect the values and traditions of other individuals and cultures, manifesting sensitivity to the needs and feelings of others by developing a good sense of ethics, integrity, honesty and a sense of justice. They are courageous and determined to stand up for what they believe in and understand the importance of mental and physical balance and personal well-being.

What does it mean to be a student at an international school? More importantly, what does it mean to attend International School Palermo? To answer all these questions, we asked two students from our Middle School, Giorgia, an M3 student, and Marco, also an M3 student.

The first thing we asked our students was just what it means to study at an international school compared to an Italian school:

"For me," Giorgia told us, "being a student at an international school is very important because everything is different from a traditional school: the approach is different, the way of teaching is different, plus our curriculum falls under the IB system and for us that is a big advantage!"

"Another very important thing for me," Marco adds, "is that we have the opportunity to use Oxford University books as early as Middle School, and this is very useful because they prepare you for the High School and Diploma Program curriculum."

We asked Giorgia, who has also studied in other international schools, what features of our International School she considers particularly important:

"I also studied in international schools in Basel and Johannesburg, they were wonderful experiences, and Gonzaga International School is no different!  Here, we students are always put at the center: the teachers are very good at explaining the program and manage to dedicate the necessary time to deepen the topics, always pushing us to find connections and topics in common with other subjects, so we learn easier and also faster!"

Marco, on the other hand, explained "One of the best things about this school is that the teachers always encourage us to be creative and curious, and we do a lot of projects and research in class. Even the evaluations are different from other schools: the professors take into account the whole path that led you to that result, your commitment and creativity!"

What is your relationship with classmates? What is it like to relate every day with boys and girls who come from other parts of the world and have other cultures?

"It's great to make friends with our classmates because we learn a lot of things and they are really nice, even in the classroom you create a beautiful relationship and we share a lot! It's great to see all this diversity and to live in an environment that stimulates you and always pushes you to be open-minded."

As for language, what is it like for you to always speak in English at school?

"Being able to study and speak in English," Marco explains, "is one of the biggest advantages of international schools: it is the most widely spoken language in the world, and we learn to use it in the correct way from an early age. It also helps us to have more choices and possibilities for the future: knowing the language so well, we can also think about applying to universities abroad or going to live in other countries."

"Knowing English as well as you know Italian," Giorgia concludes, "also helps you open up to others and have a more open mind! You can think about so many things and in a different way. One of the questions I get asked most often is "What language do you think in?" and everyone is amazed because I never know what to answer since sometimes I think in Italian and sometimes in English."
